Nolan Ryan

“If they had a higher league, he could be in it,” – Hal McRae, after his Royals were no-hit by Ryan on May 15, 1973.

“I think I’d prefer to have an outstanding year, something like 27-5. That way, people would know I was great all year rather than on just one day.” – Nolan Ryan, after pitching his fourth no-hitter, June 1, 1975.

  • With the California Angels from 1973-1979, Nolan Ryan teamed with left-handed pitcher Frank Tanana to form one of the best strikeout duos in baseball history. Tanana and Ryan combined for more than 500 K’s in 1976 and 1977.
  • On June 11, 1990, John Russell caught the sixth no-hitter of Nolan Ryan’s career, in the Rangers 5-0 win over the Oakland A’s. It was the first time Russell had ever caught Ryan in a game, and just the fourth start for Russell behind the plate for Texas. Russell hit a home run in the game.
  • Rickey Henderson was the 5,000th strikeout victim of Nolan Ryan’s career, in 1989.
