In 1960, Early Battey was struck in the head by a pitch from Boston pitcher Tom Sturdivant. The beaning was so bad that it required Battey to miss four games. But the veteran catcher took it in stride, a sign of how the game was different back then.
“It’s part of the game,” Battey said. “I hit two home runs off Sturdivant in the previous two games and should have expected to be dusted off.”
